Prologue

The birdlife scattered startled from the trees with a squawking scream that shattered the early dawn silence as frightened wildlife bolted through the undergrowth disturbed by the oncoming rumble. The vibrations echoed ominously across the rugged mountainous terrain till into view appeared a caravan of sinister metal beasts carrying its malignant toxic cargo deep and deeper into the peaceful unsuspecting Appalachian Mountains.

One lone watcher steadily filmed the procession of trucks as they made their way deeper and deeper along the deserted road to the old disused mine even though his heart was hammering with fear till he thought his head would explode. The last truck disappeared from sight and breathing a sigh of relief he tucked the camera into his coat but not before taking the cassette out and sealing it in its protective package. Scrambling hurriedly down the through the undergrowth he reached his pick up truck that was hidden from view to anyone that might stumble unsuspectingly across it. Wrenching open the door he climbed in. He needed to get this package off to that Environment Protection Agent and fast. He knew what he was doing was dangerous but necessary. After all he'd made his commitment to the environment and this dumping of toxic waste in his own backyard had to be stopped and the perpetrators brought to justice. He just hoped he wasn't getting in too deep and over his head. But his contact had recruited him to the cause after he'd stumbled unsuspectedly across the dumping ground and he in all conscience had to follow his heart and do what was right.

He drove onwards through the silent town with most of its population still in bed asleep as the dawn light pushed away the night's darkness and the stirring of a new day began. Switching off his headlights he pulled into the prearranged meeting place where his contact would be waiting for him. Spotting the agent's car he pulled along side. The contact opened his door and appeared by his driver's side window. The dark haired man inside the pickup lowered the window.

'No problems?' a small faired haired man asked the pickup's occupant. 'NoI got it all on tape.' The dark haired man handed it over. 'I was shit scared though.' He added in his soft Kentucky accent.

'You've reason to be. I can't thank you highly enough for doing this. I'll get this to the relevant people asap.' The agent said matching the Kentucky native's low spoken tone. 'Now get yourself home, this was a job well done. I'll be in touch.' He rapped the door and without a backward look climbed into his waiting car and drove off. The other man watched as the car disappeared out of sight before putting his truck into gear and driving back the way he came. The dawn was here and he needed to get to bed and sleep. His nervous energy was wearing off now as the adrenaline reseeded leaving him feeling exhausted and in need of his bed.
