Too Early, Too Late
He sat and waited anxiously
While his present began to shake
He'd soon be turning five
He'd be a big boy now
And he just couldn't wait
Then he remembered his Dad
As his Mom brought in the cake
Dad promised he'd be there-
His birthday came too early
But his Daddy came too late

The prom was tonight
Her heart just couldn't wait
She'd bought her dress
She'd done her hair
Now she waited for her date
They started getting closer
And the night had soon gone late
He pushed her on, they'd gone too far-
The baby came too early
But her conscience came too late

If we could only live
Without the pain and strife
Without the earlies and the lates
We'd have a perfect life

The doctor's say he's got an hour
A sorrowful time to wait
If not for cancer
If not for fate
He wouldn't be in this state
But he puts those 5 years behind him
As his heart slows down its beat
He meets his peace with his true God-
The cancer came too early
But his death came way too late

If we could only live
Without the pain and strife
Without the earlies and the lates
We'd have a perfect life

If only we could live
We'd have a perfect life
