Abstract

In this thesis the subject discussed is digital image sequence coding and its standardisation. The document is divided into three parts. In the first, an implementation of an encoder/decoder complying to the MPEG-2 standard is described. In the next chapter, a scheme providing lossless coding of medical images with the combination of the MPEG stream with lossless error coding is proposed. In the last chapter, some contributions to the research on Very Low Bit Rate image coding, for the development of the MPEG-4 standard, are presented.
