A good estimation of the lost blocks, can be provided by using the spatially
corresponding blocks of the previous frame. This technique performs well at
low-motion scenes. If the motion vectors for the lost blocks are received
correctly, for example in MPEG2 concealment vectors mode, the results are much
more improved by using the motion compensated blocks of the previous frame. This
technique has been shown to work very well in conjunction with data partitioned
layered coding, where the motion information is transmitted with the base layer.
Other techniques that exploit the spatial correlation, as well as the temporal
in order to estimate the lost blocks, are the maximally smooth recovery
techniques. Briefly, they apply spatiotemporal measures in the neighbourhood of
the lost blocks, to obtain an estimation that minimises them, so that the
resulting video signal is as smooth as possible.
