During my work for the project, for which this document is reporting the results, I had to deal with cutting-edge issues in the area of digital video compression and transmission. In this research area, especially in its Internet-related part, proposals are made and implemented so quickly, that it is very difficult for an individual to keep pace with the proceedings.
In a masters final project the time period is usually limited to implement any `novel' ideas that could probably be presented in a research event. However, I have the ambition that the careful reader would agree with me that this thesis cannot be described as the result of purely bibliographic and theoretical work.
