The logical outline of this thesis is organised in two parts. Part I,
comprising Chapters 2, 3,
and 4, contains the essential background and the technologies
applied to digital video encoding, transmission over packet
networks, and reliable video communications, respectively. Part II, with
Chapters 5, 6, and 7, is the
decision and implementation stage, where specific technologies are selected according to which are the most appropriate for the target scheme, the results of experiments on some of them are presented, and conclusions are drawn.
