MIDTERM

Q2) In the story "Allegory of the cave" people inside the cave who can

only see their shadows in the dark in front of them resemble real

people in our life.

Q2a) Write the connection between the people from the

cave and real people who are like that.

Q2b)Give examples.

Q2c) Who do you think is the person who "saw the light" is in real life? What does the

story teach about?

I think the people who are in the dark of the cave resemble people who are afraid to do something different in their life and discover what their abilities really are. For example, there are many opportunities for students in their universities. Some activities are made especially for students to make their life happy and more entertaining. That could be doing sports, fraternities, etc. "People who only see shadows in front of them" might be those students who don't participate in anything, just go to school and go back home when their classes are over. They never discover their true personality. Those activities could help them in discovering the "big picture" in front of them. Perhaps if they participated in those activities they could understand that they have certain interests in something or maybe even talents of themselves. The "person who saw the light" is the one who wasn't afraid to share his time to be with society. He went to activities, realized who he is and is doing everything to make his life and lives around him happy. The story itself teaches us about not to resemble those people who are in the dark cave but be an open and broad minded person.

Q8)All freshman students were required to read the novel "Tropical Fish".

Qa) Briefy summarize the whole novel.

The novel is about three girls: Christine, Rosa and Patti growing up in Entebbe, Africa. The novel talks about their life experience: what hard life they went through. The story starts when on of the girls, Patti, starts to talk about her family in Entebbe, including her Mama, Papa, and the maid. Then when the girls are still little her father dies, so their Mama has to take care of them. Then Rosa meets a guy which is the reason why she gets AIDS and then dies. Then one of the sisters comes to LA. She finds it very different from Africa.

Qb) What did you like and/or dislike about the novel?

I liked that even the life of the girls was generally bad: loosing a father, being sick with AIDS, being hungry for the whole time, they still find something to distract them from all those terrible things and live a happy life. It is mentioned when Patti finds herself on the Islands in her dreams with beautiful colors of diamonds, etc.

I didn't like how the story turned out though. When Rosa became sick with AIDS and then died I felt pity for her. I wish she had avoided it somehow...

Qc) How can you relate the novel to yourself?

The life of the girl who lived in Entebbe and then came to US, LA is kind of similar to mine. I also lived in a third party country. I can say that my life was not easy. And then 3 months ago I came to US and found how different the life is in US.

Qd) The novel teaches us many lesson, what is ONE  lesson you've learned?

The lesson that I learned was never give up, whatever happens. Think positively all the time.

Q9)  Quote one sentence from the Mismeasure of man that you like.

The most creative theories are often imaginative visions imposed upon facts; the source of imagination is also strongly cultural.

Q9a) What do you think it means?

Not all the theories made by scientists came out just like that out of their minds. Usually the scientists first observe a lot. And then I guess they just have a vision in their mind that turns out to be a good theory. I read that Enstein got his theory (MC square) in his dream.

I also think that since theories are imposed from facts and history, culture should be involved as well. Since our history is our culture.

Q9b)Why did you choose this sentence?

Like I said above about Einstein's seeing his theory in his dream. I remembered that when I read this sentence from the story "The Mismeasurement of the Man".

Also I am a future scientist myself. The sentence just caught my attention.

Q9c) We were assigned stories to read in class. From "Native American Voices" by

Chief Luther Standing Bear  to "You're Short, Besides!" by Sucheng Chan. Pick

either your assigned story, or one that was spoken about in class and summerize

it. After you summerize the story of your choice explain the meaning of it, and

what you got out of the story personally.

I remember Angelica talk about the story that she read: "Survival in Auschwitz". The story was about the World War 2, when nazis put Jews in those terrible camps. The story goes on telling the readers about the nazis and what happened. The story has been told by on person from his own life experience, who was actually there in the story (in the camp) and was the only one who survived. From the story, it was almost imposiible for anybody to survive in those kind of camps and one person did. So that was my lesson: hope. There's always hope..

Q10) Ethics of Engagement

Q10a) What makes you who you are?

I think things I like, things I do, things I eat and places I go make me who I am. Secondary how i look but that is secondary. I think the most important factor to consider who you are is not the physical appearance but the inside of a person. I think out of those billions of people on the planet none of them except me looks or behaves like me. I can have twins but they will still not be me. Because they might not listen to Hip-Hop, or they might not play soccer like I do. There's just so many things that make me me..

Q10b)Does society make you who you are?

Not exactly, but it plays a big role. Maybe it can change couple of things or interests that the person will do in the society. But whatever the society is, the person will stay the same in heart. That is my point of view.

Q10c)Has the class "Ethics of engagement"  change your life in anyway.?

Yes. If I didnt take this class I wouldnt have read all those stories that I did. After reading those stories, they made me think of life and things in general. So I learned couple things from this class and I think that changed my life.

Q10d) Do you have any suggestions to better this class

We had the last class outside. i just loved that. I wish we go out more often. I like to breathe fresh air and listen and look at the soccer field at the same time.

1. Why do you think the story "This is what it means to say Phoenix,
Arizona" is called so? In what ways has the trip to Arizona changed
life of Victor? What is the problem with Thomas and why people don't
even speak to him? Do you think Thomas and Victor will become friends
ever? What is the main concept of the story?

The story is called "This is what it means to say Phoenix, Arizona"
not only because the action takes place in that city but also because
Victor's (main character) trip to Arizona changed his entire life and
understanding of life and friendship. After Victor went to Arizona
with his friend Thomas, he improved his relationship with his old
friend that he never talked to before. I think Thomas changed the
heart of Victor: showed him what friendship is, taught him to be a
nice and more open person.
Thomas is a storyteller on the streets. People criticized him because
they thought the stories that he told were ambiguous and crazy. And
they thought that Thomas was crazy himself, but Thomas's stories were
actually true. He wasn't just a storyteller but a foreteller.
I think that Thomas and Victor will become friends. Thomas changed
Victor's life. I think Victor can changed Thomas's life too if he goes
to the street and listen to Thomas's story once in front of the crowd.
That will make Thomas very happy.
The main concept in this story is about helping each other out.
