The origin of the
clan is disputed;
one thought is that they traveled to Scotland
from Ireland in the
early 11th century.
Until 1241 the
MacLochlainns were virtually the rulers of Ulster,
until they suffered
defeat at the hands of King Brian O'Neill.
In 1292 King John
Balliol erected Argyll into a sheriffdom.
Patrick Maclachlan,
married one of
James the Steward of Scotland's daughters,
they had a son,
Lachlan, who succeeded him.
Lachlan's son, Donald,
was paid forty shillings yearly
out of the lands of Kilbride,
with an additional
annuity of six shillings and eight-pence
from his lands of
Kilbryde near Castellachlan.
At one point the
Maclachlans followed the Earls of Mar
to the Battle of Sheriffmuir.
In 1745 the
Maclachlans rallied to Prince Charles Edward Stuart.
The chief was
appointed to the prince's staff as commissary general.
During the Second
World War, the clan chiefship was assumed by
Marjory Maclachlan of
Maclachlan.
In 1939 she and her
party escaped across the River Seine
as the Nazis
approached the French Coast.
Her father, Major John
Maclachlan,
had commanded the
Argyllshire Volunteer Regiment
during the First World
War.
It is thought though
that the original seat appears to have been in
Lochaber, where a very
old branch of the family
has from the earliest
period been settled as native men of the Camerons.
