| ok, so im not really a vegetarian, as the title may have suggested why? well, ill tell you =) i have heard several arguments as to why people do not eat meat i will list them, and tell you what i think about them: - "humans arent meant to eat meat...just look at our teeth" i do see the point that they are trying to make our puny incisors are certainly not prone to tear the flesh of another animal, and we do have molars like many herbivores however, what you must realize is that "humans" were not always the way we appear today some of our early ancestors (neanderthals, for example) had bone and teeth structures that - while quite similar to ours today - were much more similiar to that of carnivores or omnivores years of evolution, along with the ease of modern society, has ensured that we no longer need leg muscles strong enough to run down a zebra, or teeth sharp enough to tear into its flesh once we do catch it; all we have to do is go to our neighborhood mcdonalds and pick up a hamburger however, that does not mean that our bodies no longer need the meat this point is never more clear than when you see a vegetarian eating an unreal amount of soy or tofu or something to get the amount of protein that one would get from eating a few chicken mcnuggets... - "its just not right to kill an animal and eat it" why not? lions do it so do all other animals who need to eat meat would it be better to make all humans eat a strict diet of soy or some other alternate source of protein just so that no animals would be harmed? with the quite substantial amount of animals that are eaten by humans every year, having that many animals "saved" would create a huge population problem but my main problem with this argument is that it gives people a huge amount of judging power for example, why is it okay to eat a carrot, but not a cow? either way, a life has to be prematurely ended in order for the human to eat it is it because one is an animal and the other is a plant? can we be sure that carrots do not have feelings? im sure they are not the same thing that humans would consider "feelings", but it is a life we are talking about you pull the carrot up from the root and end its life if vegetarians who use this logic really think life is so precious, why do they get to choose which life is okay to kill, and which isnt? ive even heard some vegetarians who say its okay to eat fish or chicken, but just not red meat? taking a life is taking a life - and as long as it is not being "wasted", but is being used for nourishment, then its good "real" vegetarians should only eat fruits because they are merely the "seed bearers" for the plant, and fall off anyway, it is not killing the plant to eat the fruit... - "animals that become our food are mistreated, im not supporting that" ill admit, this is the hardest of the arguments for me to refute i have no first hand experience of how these animals are treated, but i dont find it hard to believe that they would be treated poorly i guess it can be compared to companies having factories in third world countries and "hiring" underage children to produce their product for 15 hours a day and pay them a few dollars to do so and do i feel good about myself buying a pair of shoes or a stereo or whatever from the store when i think that maybe the person(s) who made this was little more than a slave for the giant corporation that is making a 500% or some other ridiculous profit on the sale? no and ive even "boycotted" nike products in the past when i heard about all of the "problems" they had with unfair labor overseas however, i dont NEED a pair of nike shoes i can go to payless or kmart or wherever, or if it came down to it, i could go barefoot my body NEEDS protein to survive i guess i COULD go out and kill my own animals, but (as i mentioned earlier) our modern human bodies are not very well equipped to do so it would be nice if companies would treat the animals better, because yes, they are living creatures but the part that is cruel, is not that they are being killed in the first place, it is only if they are mistreated beforehand me depriving my body of the protein that it needs in a personal boycott of the meat industry, is not going to change anything, except my diet and health etc maybe a better way to bring about change would be to do it legally through petitions, letters to elected officials, or to the companies themselves something... |
