| what does it mean to "sell-out" anyway? well, it means basically to do something that is not necessarily what you want to do, but rather to do what will make you the most money a classic (almost legendary) example of this in music is the band sugar ray in their early cds, they were a very hard rock band but they were also unknown on one cd, they had a bunch of their hard rock stuff on it, but one song that wasnt like the others that song was called "fly" it was really poppy and boy did it get some radio play people actually knew who sugar ray were so, even though they had two cds full of heavy music, and that was what they had been playing ever since they had been a band together, they decided to make every single song on the next record sound just like "fly" in hopes to make lots of money their plan worked just how they hoped they now have yet another new cd out, which sounds just like the last one they are making it really big and are really rich, and that is all that matters to them many other bands have been accused of selling out, probably most bands at one time or another when a band out sold out, especially when it was a band that i had liked for a while prior to them selling out, i used to get pretty upset about it but ive become a little more understand about it really i figure that bands change maybe they dont change as drastically or as quickly as sugar ray did, but it is ridiculous to expect a band to stay the same forever, just because you like their style at one particular time and, even if a band is "selling out", at least they are still writing their own music, playing their own instruments, or showing some type of talent...which puts them a little ahead of alot of pop bands out there in an ideal world, people would only make music for the love of making music, not to become rich but i guess selling out, is just musics way of using capitalism still, there are alot of honest, talented "musicians" out there hooray for you guys... |
