Kingdom of heaven, kingdom of earth

Genesis 13-14 deal with Abram and Lot and their choices. They've got too much stuff, and their herdsmen aren't getting along, so Abraham suggests they part ways. Abram also gives Lot first pick. So...Lot picks the good land around Sodom and Gomorrah, and Abram takes the land of Canaan, which at first glance is not so good. But Sodom and Gomorrah are attacked by foreign invaders, and Lot is taken captive. Abram rescues Lot, and meets with Melchizedek, king of Salem and priest of God, has a meal with him, and gives him a tenth of his posessions.  When Abram meets with the king of Sodom he refuses to take anything from him.

Abram has a clear vision of what God's heavenly kingdom is about.  It is not about material posessions but about serving God and others.  This is an attitude we all should learn to cultivate.
