Wisdom

1 Kings 3-4 details Solomon's dream and God's appearance to him. Solomon, having been raised in a palace, did not have the experiences of his father David, and so he requests of God wisdom to rule the people. Both before and after this Solomon offers sacrifices to God. In response, God gives Solomon this wisdom, along with unsurpassed riches and honor. Solomon then demonstrates his wisdom in a legal dispute between two harlots who fight over a child, his decision revealing the child's true mother.

One could go on forever about the value of wisdom; in fact, the book of Proverbs is entirely dedicated to it. What should be said here is that the gift of wisdom is for God's glory and not merely our own pride. "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. (Proverbs 9:10 NKJV)"
