Mercy and compassion on the congregationDeuteronomy 23-26 is about people who are not included in the congregation and about practicing mercy in various ways. Illegitimate children as well as Ammonites and Moabites are permanently excluded from the congregation, but those with Egyptian or Edomite ancestry were allowed. The Amalekites were to be wiped out, on the other hand. Charging interest is forbidden, and certain items could not be used as collateral on loans. Leftover grapes and grain were not to be harvested. A husband's brother(s) were to marry his widow to keep the property in the family, and the people were to remember their humble beginnings. God says "I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. (Exodus 33:19). God is sovreign, and is interested in mercy and compassion. We who are not should also be interested in mercy and compassion. 2006-02-13 17:18:36 GMT
