The Potter

Jeremiah 18-19 use a very powerful and well-known picture to illustrate God's rule over His creation. By comparing Himself with a potter who can make any vessel of His choice, and by having Jeremiah break a vessel in Tophet, God shows that His rule over us is absolute and that He can do whatever He chooses with us.

As the potter does not take orders from the clay in his hand, so God does not take orders from us. It is God who is absolute, and He made us for His own good pleasure.

Fallen Kings

Jeremiah 20-26 is about Jeremiah's persecution and his message to the last kings of Judah. The wickedness and frivolity of Judah's leaders during these last years have earned them dishonor, captivity, and death. The kingdom will end until God establishes a King who is truly righteous, who will rule over His people with justice.

Jesus Christ is that King, and He is the only one who is perfectly just. This allows Him to rule His people with justice and righteousness, and save His people from the oppression of sin.
