Jeremy's Thunder
copyright 1996 Cheryl Paton (page 1)
Jeremy sat in the company of his favorite stuffed animals. Bobo the Dog was there, Whiskers the Cat, two cats named Tigger, and a monkey that wasn't yet named. They were busy playing in Pretend Land, enjoying a ride on the merry-go-round.
Over on the couch laid Jeremy's favorite pillow. Jeremy used to take the pillow with him wherever he went. Now he only takes it in time of need. Like right about now.
Outside, the wind was stirring. The sky was full of dark clouds. The branches on the trees were waving up and down, as if they too were riding on a merry-go-round. Then flashes of light darted across the sky and a big rumbling noise filled the room.
"Mom!" Jeremy cried out as he quickly grabbed his pillow.
"Mom!" Jeremy cried again, as he ran off to his parent's bedroom. But his mom wasn't there.
Jeremy gripped his pillow tighter and he started to cry.
Then he smelled the smell of fried chicken coming from the kitchen. "Kitchen," he thought. Jeremy ran to the kitchen. "Mom," he cried with relief when he saw her at the stove.
Jeremy's mom bent down and scooped him up in her arms. "There, there, sweetheart," she cooed. It's all right. We are having a thunderstorm."
