Students are learning the days of the week as well as the months of the
year. They are to go home and practice wuth their parents. Students are
also learning about the changes in animals such as the frog and the
monarch butterfly. This requires that they observe the animals that are
provided in class. They can discuss any changes that they see with
classmates, their teacher, and their parent or guardian.
Objections
A couple of concerns have been raised about both the efficiency and the value of such work in the "real world" outside of university instruction.
SOme wonder why we try to get students to look at things such as the days of the week and the months of the year so soon. This is done so that when they reach first grade they will be prepared to do subjects that will require the use of this type of knowledge. If a student does not know the order of the nonths or the day they cannot answer a question that asks how many days or months are between _______ and _________? So by giving then this information we help them keep track of their personal time as well as aid them in future schoolong.Efficiency
Some feel that we as teachers are trying to give to much information to young. I will agree that there are some things that I even question why we teach it so young but the majority of the things we teach are things that students will need to know before starting the next grade level. These things allow a student to at least begin in the right spot. I feel that as long as the information we are giving to students is age appropriate and the students are able to grasp and use the information given then it is not to early to teach it.Value
Some teachers fear having the one student who does not get it and seems to struggle with simple tasks. All parents should be encouraged to work with the teacher for the betterment of the student and never work against or alone. We as teachers regardless of the predicted or visible success of the student should always get the parents involved in the education of the child. They can help in many ways if by nothing more than being a supportive and encouraging parent. These types of thing lead to not only a better school environmetnt but also a better community, and the students seem to do better overall.Effective Schools
