| Muse is an English trio from Devon (Teignmouth) which members are : Matthew Bellamy (guitar, vocals and writing), Chris Wolstenholme (bass) and Dominic Howard (drums). They are young but already have a long musical experience as they started their first band ('Rocketbabydolls') at the age of 13, playing covers and early 90's hits. Matthew Bellamy was born in Cambridge and lived in Devon since he was 10 years old. " It was ok at home, middle class, we had money.well until the age of 14. I think I almost got everything I wanted until the age of 14, yes. Then, everything changed, parents got divorced, I went to live with my grand mother, and there wasn't that much money. I have a sister who's older than me, she's actually my step-sister : my dad had her from a previous marriage, and also a younger brother. Until the age of 14 music was part of my life since it was part of the family circle : my dad was a musician, he had a band, etc. But it's only when I moved in with my grand mother that I started playing music myself. It was like a need to me. " Dominic Howard, just like Matthew, only came to Devon when he was about 8 years old. " But unlike to Matt, my parents were not at all into music, or were 'artists' in any way. I have an older sister who studied Art, I guess this was somehow what got me in touch with this background. But it still had nothing to do with music. Honestly, when I was a kid, music was what I heard on TV.At least, until I got to Highschool. That's when I started to be interested in it because there was a jazz band in particular . " Chris Wolstenholme comes from Yorkshire, but his mother was from Devon. The whole family settled back there when he was 11. " My parents were not musicians, but my mom used to listen a lot to music, she would buy records regularly." Their Meeting : Matthew : We were like twelve or thirteen years old. First I met Chris. You know, at school there were lots of bands. Almost every student was in a band. I was in one of them in which I was playing the piano, Chris was in another band, but we used to talk to each other often. As for Dom, he was in the pre-eminently 'popular' band, the one in which everyone wanted to play (smile). Somehow that's how I started playing guitar, having in mind that I had to improve to be hired in a good band (laughs). Because the one I was in was crap. A little later I made friends with Dom and when they needed a new guitar player in his band I seized upon the opportunity. Let's skip the following troubles' times in which, during two years, the band members were coming and going.until Dom and I were the only ones left. The others might have left because of me actually ! (laughs). Whatever, that's when I started to write songs seriously. But we needed a bass player. As I said before, I knew Chris but, at this time, he was playing drums. I knew he was a scrupulous and serious guy, so we asked him if he wanted to play bass. And he did. " " No doubt we made music for fun. For fun and to escape boredom. It became very serious when we were eighteen / nineteen years old. That's when we had to decide whether to go to University or not. Most of our friends gave up music to focus on their studies and think about their future. We realized that we were not interested in school anymore and that we wanted to keep up the band. And we were willing to accept crappy little jobs to make it possible. The choice was not easy, but I think I hated school anyway." The first concerts : " I remember the first real concert we've ever made was for a band competition. We were the only real rock band, all the others were pop or funk- pop, kinda Jamiroquai if you want. We knew we had no chance to win - we were not the best musicians- it was a matter of 'fitting'. So we did the best we could, we took advantage of our feeling of being 'different'. We came on stage with make up all over our face, we were very aggressive, we played very violently and then we broke everything on stage. All that to say that the will, the attitude meant a lot to us. So we won. And I think that psychologically it changed many things in our heads. Because we came to lose, we expected to lose. And we were angry somehow. And we had just realized at this time that will could replace lots of things. We realized that emotion, the vibrations that you create are as important as your technical skills. We had just discovered something : music is a matter of emotion." Records Companies : After some concerts in Devon's bars and little clubs, the Record Company Tastemedia contacted them to record their first CD : 'Muse EP' (Overdue, Cave, Coma, Escape) (999 copies were released on the 'Dangerous' Label). September 13th 1998, their show at the 'Collier in the City' gives them the chance to attract notice from Madonna's Record Company 'Maverick'. Their first album ('Showbiz') will be recorded a little later with the collaboration of the sound engineer John Leckie (who had worked in particular for Radiohead on 'the bends'). The record will first be released exclusively in France September the 7th 1999, and then a month later in the rest of the world. Through the media and by word of mouth, Muse would become what they are now. |
