Only Hope

A bitter cold wind
touches her bare skin
She slinks into the night
carefully avoiding the patches of ice
Creeping among the tents

she picks up her skirt,
walking silently until
she hears voices around a corner
Desperately she jumps into the shadows
waiting until her comrades go by
She sighs and continues her mission
sneaking among her soldiers,
she crosses the border of their camp
Throwing her shoulders back, chin up high
she walks into the enemy camp
Eyes downcast she dodges the burly men
heading towards the heart of the camp
Suddenly she can see the fortress,
the last fortress of her people.
Her heart beats rapidly
as she considers what shes about to do
Her eyes dart from the fortress
to all the enemies that surround her
They come to rest on a makeshift tower
right outside the fortress walls,
Slowly, cautiously
she makes her way to the wooden tower
Rough hands pull her back
against a full chest
What are you doing here?
Go back to the slave pens.
He grabs her face
kissing her violently
She hears a soft voice calling,
Come, I am better at such things
The girl comes to her rescue,
distracting the man
taking him to a corner
glancing at the young woman
she says, Go, go now!
Her eyes were warm, gentle, and frightened
The young woman nods
sneaking up to the tower
With a quick glance to make sure no one was watching
she lays her hands on the massive beams
She could feel the sharp splinters
digging into her palms
She starts to climb
one beam at a time
The freezing wind threatens to tear her off her perch
but she holds on tightly
Finally she reaches the top
she creeps closer to the fortress
Takes a deep breath
and leaps,
catching hold of a window ledge
Now, the enemies knew what she was doing
she had little time left
She yells into the window:
The traitor is coming to your aid!
Tell the Queen!
The traitor is coming to her aid!
She yells over and over again,
until more rough hands yank her from the wall
She screams
trying to get the sacred message across.
She was brought down to the ground
among a circle of men
And among them
was the one that would kill her
She knew her fate
and accepted it
Why do you betray me?
he asked mockingly
They tied her to a pole
the hard wood grazing her soft cheek
This is a warning to all your fellow countrymen
who decide to betray me!!
He yanked her dress off her back
and pulled out a knife
She knew what was going to happen
she tried to find peace
She was their only hope
The only person who could bring her countrymen together
She waited for it to start
