Titirangi Observatory
Observatory construction historyThe basic construction is a standard garden shed modified with a roof frame that can be rolled off onto a simple support structure. I chose to build the observatory from a standard shed in order to save both time and money when not having to construct everything from scratch. The observatory was built in just 9 days and the cost was around NZ$2000, including concrete, timber, the shed, all wiring etc. It was surprisingly easy and I can highly recommend this approach to anyone interested in observatory construction. A major source of inspiration was Chris Vedeler's website with a very nice step by step documentation of the construction. I have assembled a similar overview below. The observatory is built on a slight slope so I had to do some leveling before the construction could begin. I chose to erect six 10x10 posts as a foundation, and thereby also get the advantage of raising the building 50cms above the ground. This gives me better view of the sky.
