| In a letter dated July 31, 2000, HVPN was informed of its determination
of tax exempt status under section 501(c)3 of Internal Revenue Service
Code. This successful determination came as the culmination of
almost 6 years of work (including the early exploratory and information
gathering stages of the process). The actual application was filed
in March of 1999, and was in review for over a year. We are particularly
pleased that a favorable determination was made, without requests for
further information, as our committee was comprised completely of lay
people (not an accountant or an attorney in the bunch)!
What does this mean to us as an organization? Well, first, a bit more work. With Federal tax exemption in hand, we must now formally apply for tax exemption in NYS. This is merely a formality, but will take several weeks to process. Once this has been done, HVPN will no longer have to pay sales tax on purchases made for the use of the group in fulfilling the purposes of the group. More importantly, HVPN can now accept donations of money, goods and services from members and non-members. Individuals making such donations will be eligible to deduct their donations from their taxes, in the same way one would deduct any similar charitable donation. When donations are received, the organization will issue a receipt, which can be saved by the donor to prove the donation, should this become a necessity. If you have any questions concerning how this may affect you, please ask any Executive Committee member. Needless to say, the Executive Committee of HVPN, Inc. is thrilled to be able to make this announcement. We feel that this is a huge step forward for our organization, and for Pagan groups in general! |
