| Of all the gods available to us, my personal favorite is the Celtic Horned God, Cernunnos. He represents all that is wild and untamed. He is known by other Names: Hearne the Hunter (British), and Dispater (Gaul), and is mostly seen sitting in a cross-legged “ shamanistic” position holding a horned serpent in one hand, and a torq in the other. His Celtic moon phases are the Oak/Holly phases, and he is active from Beltane through Samhain. It is in the autumn months that he is perhaps most active. He is the Master of the Hunt, and is the Guardian to the Gates of the Underworld. During the Great Hunt, he comes down from the evening sky accompanied by a pack of phantasmal hunting hounds and together they scour the country side collecting souls of the recently deceased to take them to the Underworld. He is also a fertility god who also represents a strong healthy libido, and represents abundance in financial matters as well as the years harvest. As master of animals and all that is wild, his “essence” can perhaps be seen when the male animals battle each other for dominance and the chance to mate with any and all available females. A god such as this truly deserves to be honored and respected by those who love the outdoors and wild places and all the things that represent masculinity. -Greenman |
