Muse-ically Speaking

Trouble in Shangri-La
Stevie Nicks

I remember being "on the edge of seventeen", and for me that was pretty intense! Plus, there's always that witch thing we have in common. There was always this rumor that she was one, but I always gave her the benefit of the doubt because maybe it was just her wispy, gypsy dress or her raven voice that made people say such things about her. My ex went to a party at her house in the 80's and swears it's true! Well, maybe it is. Plus the fact that her songs are copyrighted under Welsh Witch Music (BMI). Dead giveaway?

So, when I heard she came out with a new album, I was very excited. Several guest vocalists joined her in this new venture, including Sheryl Crow, Macy Gray, Natalie Maines, and Sarah McLachlin. Many of the songs include Sheryl as producer or vocalist, and you can hear her influence in the arrangements. However, every song is pure Stevie, her style, hre voice, everything. The rock rocks, the ballads soothe, and she sometimes even leans towards a country style, but she makes it work so well you don't even mind. As you listen to each song, you can feel the underlying current of energy behind her music. There's power, beauty, sadness, and truth in every lyric and every note. Each song has magic to it, and even after listening to this album many times, I'm left wanting for more. I have to wonder if it's enchanted somehow because even my daughter sits quietly and listens.

If you have ever been a Stevie fan, whether as a musician or as a witch, I encourage you to check out this album. You won't be disappointed.
