Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within

This movie, now available on video and DVD, is an intriguing blend of high tech science fiction, inexplicable alien invasion, earth spirituality, shoot 'em up action and computer animation. In this case, we are on Earth in the not-too-distant future, and some alien creatures, dubbed Phantoms, have arrived on a Leonid meteor that crashed into the Caspian Mountains 30 years before the start of the movie.

A group of scientists believes they can save the world, if they can find eight interchangable spirit pieces. Our heroine is collecting the sixth piece as the movie starts. And, of course, there is a military faction on Earth that just wants to blast the whole thing to smithereens. They have built the weapon, but need permission from the government to fire it.

The clue to the solution is the spirit within all of us, especially the spirit of Earth, Gaia, and that of the aliens' home world. To this viewer, who straddles the worlds of science and spirituality, presentation of the blend in this movie works. The dialog is well delivered; the characterizations are well developed, and, ah, the computer animation is quite detailed. Although, I do think they spent more time on the fine detail of our heroine that some of the other characters - she has longer hair that moves. The other characters are slicked back, buzz cut, or bald.

This is an enjoyable movie, with some violence, no bad language, and nothing more than a kiss. Enjoy it.
