Stupendous Solstice Simmering Potpourri

You will need:

  • A small saucepan or potpourri
  • simmerer
  • Enough water to cover the ingredients
Place 1 sliced Clementine tangerine, 1 1/2 Tbsp. chopped fresh pine needles, as much freshly grated cinnamon and nutmeg as you like, 1 Tbsp. sassafras root bark, 1 drop clove oil and a pinch of crushed anise seed.

Pour enough water in the pot to cover the above ingredients.  Simmer and smell!  Add more water when necessary.

This is wonderful for creating an inviting atmosphere for those chilly nature spirits.  Invite them in out of the cold.

The clover is the trefoil of the Midsummer fire. The rare and lucky four-leafed clover that, like the foliage of St. John’s wort, or the seed pods of rue, are the four part radial symbols of the Sun Wheel. The four-leaf clover is collected anytime as a lucky amulet:

One leaf for fame, one leaf for wealth, One leaf for love, and one for health.

Witch denied license to conduct weddings

In a decision one of her followers called “a slap in the face to all pagans,” a self-proclaimed witch Friday was denied a license to perform wedding ceremonies in Virginia. Rosemary Kooiman, of Lanham, Md., applied to Fairfax County Ciruit Court for permission to officiate at marriages in her pagan religion, Wicca.  “I am not criticizing your beliefs,” Chief Judge F. Bruce Bach said. “But your religion does not qualify as a religious denomination.”  Kooiman, 69, who said she was a self-ordained minister of a 50-member group, said she was disappointed by Bach’s decision, and intends to appeal. “To me, this is religious discrimination,” Kooiman said. “He has the basic cultural bias:  If the religion is not Christian, it is not valid.”
-The Daily Gazette (Saturday, May 9, 1998)

At Midsummer it is traditional to make amulets of protection out of various herbs for homes and animals. Boughs of Rowan were hung up over the entrances to stables and barns as protection against any evil magick which might cause harm or disease to the livestock.  Today not everyone keeps horses or cattle but anyone who has a pet dog, cat or bunny may wish to hang a sprig of Rowan over their “place” to give the special protection of magick to a beloved pet or companion.

The Times Union (Albany NY) recently reported that the Hungarian Association of Witches went on trial in Febriary for alleged tax evasion. The witches were accused of not reporting income from spells, sales of skulls, amulets, and dead frogs. Details are not yet available on the trial's outcome. The NY Times reported that the last woman jailed for witchcraft in Britain might be pardoned posthumously 40 years after her death. helen duncan was jailed in 1944 under the 1735 witchcraft act for allegedly conjuring up the sprit ofa sailor killed on a battleship - the sinking of which was a state secret. She was believed to be a security risk and it was feared that she might "see" and reveal the sites for the D-Day landings in France.
A January 1998 article in The Chronicle of Higher Education focused on Americal college campuses. A University of Houston sociologist reported that there are "groups of students practiciing rituals of American Indian, Wiccan, or Druid traditions - attending sweat lodges, celebrating lunar cycles - while others practice variations of Christianity...". Research and reports such as these help establish pagan religions as valid and accepted religious options. The Associated Press reported that the Psychic Friends Network recently filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Apparently, it didn't see it coming and found itself with liabilities of $26 million and assets of $1.2 million. No predictions were reported on its future.

Coca Cola Ad Update

Coca Cola's nationwide commercial slogan, "Colder than a Witch's [extremity]" has been met with resistance. 48,000 petition signatures have been collected from 45 states. To date, the ad has only been seen in Hawaii and Canada. For more information on how you can help deter this tasteless ad, contact Dylan Thorne at 36 Grove St., Braintree, MA 02184, 617-843-1149

Blessed Be and Merry Meet Me in DC on October 31 and November 1 turned out to be a small event. Although no official attendance figures are available, participants conducted a drumming circle at the Jefferson Memorial, placing flowers around the Lincoln Memorial and donated food to a local (DC) food bank. Call for Ritual Effects:

If you have any items that you would like to donate for use in HVPN rituals, a collection is being established. Any altar items, fabrics, musical instruments, incense or any other tools that can be used for ritual are welcome. Contributions will be accepted at any business meeting or HVPN sponsored event.
