On a recent trip to Washington DC, I was moved to tears at the sight of thousands of protestors carrying placards on the West Mall, in front of the White House, and throughout the city. Some of the protests centered around WTO policies. The Teamsters were there in force to protest sky-high gasoline prices, and Right-to-Life groups were protesting abortion. I was overjoyed to see them there, not because I supported their causes, but because our country is one in which such a demonstration can take place. It was a wonderful sight to see them there, chanting and waving their placards, trying to sway the opinions of lawmakers.
This form of political dialog is crucial and it needs to continue and expand. It is only through the open expression of opinion that political change becomes possible. It’s time to end apathy at the grassroots level--start now, at home, with yourself. Whatever the causes you embrace, whatever opinions you hold, whichever of the candidates for public office you support, please find a means of expressing these beliefs. Donate money, donate time, or simply VOTE. The only vote that doesn’t count is the one not cast. The only opinion that doesn’t count is the one that remains unexpressed.
It may be a fallacy that there is any meeting of Pagan minds on the issues or the candidates. I know Pagans who plan to support Nader, Gore, Browne, and, yes, Bush. Some of the articles contained in this issue of Crescent Shadows may rattle your chains. But, if we stir even one person enough to cause them to go out and get active in the process, we will have accomplished the purpose of this issue.
