Nels Hansen Stave was born near Oslo, Norway in January of 1845.  He lived in the area of Stavern, near Larvik,  in the county of Vestfold.  He worked in a glass factory in Oslo before enlisting in the Norwegian Army, which was mandatory at that time.  He served during a war between Denmark and the Germans that lasted 6 months.  Afterwards, he went back to work in the glass factory.  It was in Oslo that he met his future wife.  They married and had one child while in Norway.  Sometime between 1864 and 1879, Nels immigrated first to Goodhue County, MN and earned enough money to send for his wife and child, Oveda and Oscar.  They settled with the Haaken Haakenson family and later followed them to Marshall County, MN.  Nels and Oveda had one other child, a girl named Helga, who was born in MN.  While living in Marshall county, they had a boarder who was living with them during both the 1900 and 1920 censuses.  His name was Ed Hansen, and he is said by those who remember him to have been some sort of relative of the family.  Even though his name was Ed, he was called Hans.

Nels Stave had a half brother, named Hans Nilsen Hansen, who emmigrated from Norway to Keewatin, Ontario.  His ship departed from Larvik, Norway on Aug 18, 1902.  He was listed as a snedker (carpinter), ugift (unmarried), and was residing in Eidsvold.  He was traveling alone under the name Hans Nilsen, and his date of birth was given as 25/12/1837.  He died in Ontario on January 23, 1936 and was buried in the Lake of the Woods Cemetery.  His obituary listed several children who survived him: sons named John and Hans, living in Kenora, Ontario; a son Carl of Keewatin, Ontario; and a son Ole of Saskatchewan.  According to his gr-grandson, Mick Gordon of Ontario, there was another son named Nels and a daughter named Annie.

Oscar Nelson grew up to marry Thelma Thea Mattson Osmar, who had been married once before.  Thea and her husband (Mr. Osmar) were married in Norway, and their only daughter, Olga, was born there.  They immigrated to MN, and Mr. Osmar died shortly thereafter.   Thea remarried to Oscar and they raised five children of their own, as well as Olga.  Their children were Annie (Mrs. Arthur Vedbraaten) b. 1890; Alma T. (Mrs. Peter Lindemoen) b. 1892, d. 1972, Ollie: b. 1894, d. 1990; Arthur (m. Lillian Vary) b. 10 Feb 1898, d. 5 Aug 1989; and Nels O. Nelson: b. 1899, d. 1971.

Arthur (Art) Nicolai (Nicholas) Nelson, son of Nels Stave and Thelma Thea Mattson Osmar,  married Lillian Josephine (christianed Mary Lily) Vary, daughter of Philias Vary and Mary Poole of Oakwood, ND in the Stephen Catholic Church in Stephen, MN.  They were the first couple to be married in the new church.
