Henry Schreiber was a Hessian soldier during the Revolutionary War - a mercenary, as all Hessian soldiers were. He was brought to America by the English to fight the colonial Americans. As many Hessian soldiers did, Henry deserted shortly after arriving on the new continent. He eventually ended up in Quebec, where he married a French Catholic woman named Anne Marie Dumas. Because he was not French Catholic, they were married by a notaire rather than in the church.
