Thomas Poole was born in Ireland. He immigrated to the Ottawa Valley of Ontario in the mid-1800s where he met and married Sarah McCann beteen 1851 and 1861. The couple settled in the area of Grafton, ND around 1870, having brought family with them from Ontario. They attended the Oakwood Sacred Heart Catholic Church several times, which is perhaps where their daughter Mary Poole met Philias Vary, who was born in the Montreal area of Quebec. They were married and had a daughter named Mary Lily, who was later known by the name Lillian Josepine, wife of Arther Nelson. Lillian and Arther were the very 1st couple to be married in the Stephen Catholic Church in Stephen, Marshall County, MN. They raised 10 children of their own, and for a time 2 nephews of Lillian's after the boys' parents died. |
