Jacques Menard dit LaFontaine and Catherine Fortier were married in Trois Rivieres, Quebec on Nov 19, 1657. Their daughter Marie Menard married Jacques Bourdon, son of Jean and Marguerite (Legris) Bourdon of Normandy, France, who had immigrated to Quebec in the mid-1600s. Four generations after Marie and Jacques, their descendant Rosalie Bourdon married Charles Vary, and their son Moyse/Moise Vary immigrated to the US with his family just before the 1870 census of ND. They were among the first families of a settlement named Oakwood, about 1 mile east of Grafton, ND. It still exists today, though it is a very small town, and the church (still in use) can be seen from the highway on the right hand side as you are traveling west towards Grafton from I-29. The settlement was mostly French Catholic, with a few Irish Catholic families attending church there in the first few years.
