The McCann family left Ireland around the year 1830 and settled in the Ottawa Valley along the northwest shore of Mississippi Lake  near the town of Carleton Place in Lanark County, Ontario.  Sarah McCann, daughter of Irish emmigrants Michael and Julia (Murphy) McCann, was  born in Ontario and married Thomas Poole (who was born in Ireland) and the couple moved to the area of Grafton, ND around 1870.  They attended several church services at the Oakwood Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and perhaps that is where their daughter Mary Poole met Philias Vary, who was born in Laprairie, Quebec in the Montreal area.  The couple married and had a daughter named Mary Lily Vary, who was later known as Lillian Josephine, wife of Arther Nelson of Stephen, MN.  Lillian and Arther (or Art as he was often called) were the very 1st couple married in the Stephen Catholic Church in Stephen, Marshall County, MN.
