The Vary family left France in the late 1600s. Michel Vary and Anne Belot(e) were married in par. de Chalone, diocese de Angers, Anjou, France. Their son Charles Vary (b.1669) married Marie Dumets/Dumers (b. 1668) on Nov 1, 1712 at St. Antoine de Pade, Longueuil, near Montreal, Quebec. I do not know yet whether Charles was born in Quebec or France, or whether or not his parents came with him to Quebec. Five generations later, Moise and Esther (LaRoche) Vary moved their family around the year 1870 to Oakwood, ND, a town settled mostly by other French Catholics. They were one of the earliest families to settle in that community. The town of Oakwood is a tiny town approx 1 mile east of Grafton, ND. The church (still in use) can be seen on the right side of the highway when traveling to Grafton from I-29. Moise and Esther's son Philias met and married Mary Poole (b. Ontario). Their daughter Mary Lily, later known as Lillian Josephine, married Arthur Nelson of Stephen, MN. They were the very first couple to be married in the Stephen Catholic Church. Art and Lillian raised 10 children of their own, and for a time 2 nephews of Lillian's after the boys' parents died.
