Fellow bloggers might like to see this picture of the great Amir of the Afghans, Dost Mohammad Khan, at the time of the first Afghan war in 1839. He was the head of the Mohammadzais dynasty.

One hundred and forty years after the first Afghan War with Britain, the Soviet Union invaded the country. Possibly 1.3 million Afghans and 15,000 Soviet troops died, 451 Soviet planes and helicopters and 147 tanks were destoyed. The Russians ended up leaving in ignominy. Why should the US-led operation be any more successful?
