The environment lobby is making welcome progress in the wake of successive scientific reports. Governments, persuaded by an increasing public awareness, are bending backwards in their efforts to gain the attention of potential voters. New Labour is turning to green taxation as its weapon in the war on waste. But it does nothing to reduce its expenditure on the scandalous wars in Iraq and Afghanistan which waste the nation's resources and contribute to global warming on an heroic scale and yet are never mentioned as a factor in the tax equation. Our government has an easy way to prove its environmental credentials - cease its support for Bush's wars and tell the US that until it signs up alongside the EU in the attack on global warming it will receive no further cooperation of any kind from Britain.
