Youth Team 2000/2001 The 2000/2001 season was another successful one for Fred Auld and Harry Chambers' side. Most of our Youth Team were a year younger than our opponents, but this didn't stop us giving them all a run for their money. Our new signings, goalkeepers Simon Eldridge and Phil Warfield, defenders James Gregory and Phil Wideson, and our influential midfielder Andy Martin, meant that we had a huge squad at the start of the season. It took the new players a few games to settle in as Hughenden Athletic lost the first few games. We were then inspired after putting up a brave fight in the cup against the eventual finalists, and we started to pick up league points. The mid season was decimated by the weather, but the long breaks seemed to work well for our team. We won 6 consecutive league games, a run which lasted an unbelievable 4 months! The highlight came in February when we were victorious over local rivals Naphill. We had not beaten them for years, but our 4-2 away win was followed by a 7-1 home drubbing in April. This, added to our last day revenge over Bedgrove, secured 3rd place in the league. Special mentions go to the dirty Martin James, who picked up more cards than anyone else. Goal machine Chris Winn is still untouched at the top of the scoring charts with 31 this season, and the consistent Alex Pickles remarkably failed to score despite starting all but two games. We will be without 4 players next season as they are forced into retirement from the youth game. Phil "the cat" Warfield's exit means Simon Eldridge will be one of the best keepers at the club, and Andy Martin will be missed for his midfield presence and dressing room banter. Phil "static" Wideson is also leaving, as is James Gregory, who unfortunately missed most of the season through injury.
