scientific identification: Belontiidae Betta imbellis*
aka: plakat, betta, siamese fighting fish
variants: n/a. although various non-standard crosses with the domesticated varieties (Betta splendens) are available

A small fish native to Southeast Asia in the regions of Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore. The size of adults can range up to 2 inches.

The name of this fish, imbellis, means “not warlike”, and is a fairly accurate description of this fish’s relatively peaceful nature. Several of these fish can be kept in a single tank, and although they may flare at each other, they will usually refrain from actually engaging in fights.

This fish is a good jumper and therefore tanks housing them should be well covered.

The breeding characteristic and care requirements of this fish are similar to the domesticated strains.

* May also be known as Betta splendens, although this latter name more properly identifies the more aggressive and domesticated strains of this species.
