COURSE DESCRIPTION: In the program for the 10th grade, the students read core and

extended selections that develop and increase awareness of literature. They use a variety of strategies to comprehend the subtleties of great literature. The student will tackle literary terms such as irony, plot development, metaphor, simile, mood, etc. They will also read both classic and contemporary readings such as Shakespeare and Amy Tang. The course is designed to not only develop literary skills but also to enrich the student's writing ability, as essay writing is an important component. Comprehension of fiction and non-fiction literature will be focused in this course as well.

 

MAJOR GOALS/CONCEPTS:

·         ·         Demonstrate competence in the general skills and strategies of the reading process.

·         ·         Demonstrate competence in speaking and listening as tools for learning.
