 Course Description:

British Literature and Composition is a grammar, composition, and literature class.  Students will experience a variety of writing modes where they will have the opportunity to refine their language and use skills.  In addition, students will respond to a variety of literary forms written by classic and contemporary authors.

Course Textbook:

Textbooks:       The British Tradition. Prentice Hall Literature.

Additional Reading Selections will be assigned throughout the year.

Classroom Expectations:

It is expected that each student will come to class prepared with the necessary materials every single day that class meets.  There are several things that have no place in an educational setting and therefore are not allowed in the classroom.  These include:  drinks other than clear water, food or candy, cellular phones, disc players, earphones, etc….  Students who choose to bring these things into the classroom will have them taken by the teacher.

 Assignments:

All assignments that are turned in for credit must include the student’s name, the date, and the hour of the class in the upper right-hand corner of the paper.  The title of the assignment should also be easy to find at the top of the paper.

Homework & Late Work Policy:

Because of the amount of material to be covered, homework will be an integral part of English class.  The amount of homework will vary depending on the current activities of the class.  All students are required to turn in assignments on time!  Late work will not be accepted unless the student provides a legitimate excuse that is supported by a letter from a parent/guardian.  If a student is absent it is their responsibility to ask about the work to be made up.

Tardy Policy:

Students are expected in class and seated on time.

Plagiarism & Cheating:

Any copying of any assignment from any class is considered plagiarism and is not allowed.  Any student caught copying will receive a zero on the assignment as will the student whose paper is being copied.  Copying any information from any source word for word and presenting it as your own work is plagiarism.  The assignment will be heavily penalized or given a zero.  If a student is caught cheating during a test the student will receive a zero on that quiz or test.

 Grading Policy:

1)      Homework: 20%

2)      Classwork: 20%

3)      Papers: 20%

4)       Quiz : 10%

5)      Projects: 20%

These percentages are all subject to change, depending on students’ and course development.
