British Literature

12th Grade

Text: Prentice Hall literature, “The British Tradition” 

 
Introduction to the Subject

 In the program for the 12th. Grade, the students read core and extended selections that develop and increase awareness of literature.  They use a variety of strategies to comprehend the subtleties of great literature. The student will tackle literary terms such as irony, plot development, metaphor, simile, mood, etc.  They will also read both classic and contemporary readings such as Geoffrey Chaucer, Shakespeare, William Blake, etc. The course is designed to not only develop literary skills but also to enrich the student’s writing ability, as essay writing is an important component.  Comprehension of poetry, epic, fiction and non-fiction literature will be focused in this course as well.   The twelfth grade students will use organization skills, audience awareness, appropriate vocabulary and grammar, and both verbal and nonverbal presentation skills to plan and deliver an effective presentation.

 

 
Major goals/Concepts

Students should:

*Demonstrate competence in the general skills and strategies of the writing process

*Demonstrate competence in the general skills and strategies of the reading process

*Demonstrate competence in speaking and listening as tools for learning

*Demonstrate an understanding of the nature and function of the English language

*Demonstrate a familiarity with selected literary works of enduring quality

*Demonstrate an enriched vocabulary

*Develop skills in preparing and delivering formal oral presentations.  To this end, they will develop skills in identifying a purpose, researching topics, developing content, and delivering presentations

*Be able to evaluate the effectiveness of speeches and to develop critiques of presentations

*Be able to explain how British Literature as influenced and has been influenced by the literature of other cultures

*Trace and examine the development of British Literature and the literature of other cultures by focusing on the recognition of characteristics of chronological periods and literary techniques.

*Relate literary works and their authors to major themes and issues

*Understand that critical evaluation is the process of judging the merit or value of a piece of literature or dramatic art, and that the process includes evaluating the author’s effectiveness in integrating component parts to create a whole

*Students will research topics and develop documented papers that support a thesis, in addition, students must learn to cite and avoid plagiarism
