| The M38 | |||||
| The M38 was first designed in 1907 as the 1907 carbine. There was no great need for a carbine then and very few were produced. In 1938, with Europe on the brink or war, the need for a carbine for rear area troops and armored vehicle crews was apparent. Production began in 1939 at Izhveshek and continued until 1945. Tula produced limited numbers of them in 1940 and 1945. Tula models and 1939-41 M38s are highly valued by collectors, and are hard to find. | |||||
