During the battle of Leyte Gulf the Hutchins carried the Flag of Captain McManes. During the engagement Captain McManes manuvered his Destroyers to fire torpedos into the on- coming Japanese ships sinking one Japanese destroyer and then retired his squadron to allow the big guns to brought bear down on tthe Japanese Fleet.. This battle placed the death blow into the Japanese Naval Force.
