Welcome to the Northeast Section of Queens

Astoria and Long Island City are often linked as one and the same according to the post office's zip code info. While both sections are in western Queens, Long Island City is to the south of Astoria. (Try not to confused the Long Island City neighborhood with Long Island - suburbs, farms and beaches, further to the East) Some snobs may want the distinction properly noted, but as long as I get my mail you may call it either of the two in my book.

Since 1992 we, my husband and I have lived in this section of Queens. This area had been famous for the Greek population that lived here for generations. Of course there had been a sizable Italian Immigrant contingency here as well. Tony Bennet, a child of Italian immigrants, grew up in this neighborhood.

As time goes by, the older immigrants have either retired, moved out or died and a now new wave of hardworking immigrants are finding this area ideal for settling down are raising their families. Many US born citizens have settle here too.

My neighbors are from all over the world here, as well as from other parts of the US. My husband, himself was born in Egypt and there is a sizable North African community that settled here or nearby. Needless to say, we have felt quite at home here. Sometimes watching the school children on their way to or from their classes is like watching the United Nations in miniature.

Traveling has not always been easy for us. Even at this time my husband has held two jobs while I have worked overtime. Of course, since our child was born, it has been a little bit more complicated. But we try to live a life here and introduce our daughter to the world as best as we can.
