Cleveland NJROTC Jr. Varsity Commanders The 1999 Junior Varsity Commanders finished the season with a 3-2-1 mark. The season started slow with a couple of tough 6 to 0 losses to Beaumont and Gateway high schools. Sandwiched in between these two losses was a 16 to 6 victory over a much improved Soldan squad. Mid-season saw the Commanders sitting at 1-2 and wondering what had happened. The second half of the season began with a 24 to 6 homecoming whipping of Roosevelt. Next up was perennial power Sumner. After falling behind 16 to 0 at half the commanders found their stride and came back to earn a hard-fought 22 to 22 tie. The final game of the season pitted the 2-2-1 Commanders against the 3-2 Vashon Wolverines. This game featured some great defense by the Commanders who shut out Vashon 8 to 0, thus, bringing home a winning season and 3rd place in the PHL PHL Junior Varsity Football Standings Gateway Tech 6-0 Sumner 4-1-1 Cleveland NJROTC 3-2-1 Vashon 3-3 Beaumont 2-4 Roosevelt 1-4-1 Soldan 0-5-1
The Commanders were led by Freshman tailback/linebacker Terry Washington. Terry rushed for 846 yards in six games. Other team leaders were Quarterback: Jermaine Blake. Fullbacks: Eddie Mcniel, Sean Richardson Offensive linemen: Byron Beal, Deandre Binns, Jennifer Perkins, Bobby Thomas, Joe Brown, Chris Stacy, Terry . Defense: Byron Beal, Terry Washington, Sean Richardson, Marcus Bruce and Duane Gohlsten, Rod Wainwright, Cecil Brown, William Bishop. Kicker: Giovanni Rivera (no relation to Geraldo).
