Nitro, Hoover wrestle at WSAZ Invitational

More than 20 high schools are expected to compete in the WSAZ Invitational wrestling tournament, which begins today at Veterans Memorial Fieldhouse in Huntington.

Among the teams on display will be Nitro, Herbert Hoover, Cabell Midland and the host Highlanders, ranked fifth in the latest Class AAA coaches poll. The Huskies are ranked sixth.

Junior high and middle school squads will also be competing. Wrestling begins at 5:30 p.m. and will continue Saturday at 10 a.m.

The finals are scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.

Most Kanawha Valley schools not hitting the mat in Huntington will be taking part in the inaugural Viking Winter Classic, hosted by Ripley High. George Washington, St. Albans and Hurricane are among the field of 10 teams taking part in the event. Ripley is seventh in the latest coaches poll.

Wrestling begins at 10 a.m.
