| 10-21-00 Picked up eight week old Havoc from breeder. Went to local park to test reaction to bird wings. Had goose, pheasant and duck wings. Puppy was very interested and immediately lunged and snapped for wings. Puppy would chase thrown wings, pickup and run around with them or lay down and chew on them. Puppy did not wish to return to thrower, even though I did not immediately take the wing away. His eye sight is still limited so kept wings close to the ground and threw them at ground level. Maximum distance thrown was about five or six feet. 10-22-00 Drove 10 hours home from breeders. Puppy was excellent traveler no throwing up or discomfort. Dropped my Mom off at her house. Puppy allowed to roam yard. Climbed rock garden and explored thick weeds and rocks. Was bold and unafraid. Socialized with sisters dog Grace, lab/rot mix. 10-23-00 Took Havoc to Lake Holms and threw wings again for him. He would not touch the water even tho he could reach the wing without entering. Water is too cold to even want him in it anyway. Havoc was very excited and chased thrown wings into tall grass and thick mud. Prefers at this point to get wing, run around and then lay down to chew on. Happy to have so much interest in the wing period, so definitely not worried about handling or intention at this point. Retrieved canvas bumper in the back yard. Just trying to get some idea what to expect from this little guy. He chases the bumper and picks up readily. Surprised at this much coordination at this age. 10-26-00 Gave Havoc a few canvas bumpers in the backyard. Eyesight is better and he is getting the idea of the game. I can throw from a few feet off the ground and about 10 to 12 feet away now. He is always picking things up and carrying them around. Sticks, pine cones and anything he can find. 12-16-00 Was taking video of Touley at river. All other none moving water currently frozen. Brought Havoc out to run around while setup was taking place for video. Mud was very thick and slimy with dead leaves. Dead salmon were spread out around the area, left over from spawning. Careful to setup training area for older dog in silty fine dirt as this is not an area where salmon eggs would survive. Havoc explored area with no apprehension for mud or water. He was actually wading out into the water and getting his feet wet. This with no encouragement or intention on my part. The water is far too cold to want him in it at all. He continued throughout the time to wad into and get feet wet in order to explore things he was seeing. He showed absolutely no sensivity to the cold. This is very unusual as both my other dogs are extremely cold sensitive. Havoc is thicker boned than both of the girls and still has the "buddha" belly of a puppy. I just find this interesting as cold sensitivity is an issue for these poodles and will continue to eveluate his unique ability. The area is foresty with trees and fallen logs. It is a small channel branching off from the main river and mostly running water chest deep. Havoc explores the surrounding area always checking back with me every few minutes. I am a little concerned with his desire to stay right by my side. Nice for obedience but not what I want in a hunting dog. He did exactly as I wished in this area going further away from me without fear. He expolored the woods, logs, mud, water ... everything with no fear. Barked at a fisherman who appreared unexpectedly but backed off when I stepped in front to take alpha position. Have to watch carefully alpha ques as he is a dominant boy. Excellent experience overall and very positive. Have great hopes for excellent swimming ability based on his natural comfort in and around the water. He is much more comfortable than either of the previous dogs. |
