Marriage Index Books are available for each county in our state data bases. These 8.5'x11' softbound, side-stitched books contain an alphabetical listing of all grooms and brides as well as marriage/filing date of each marriage within our records. Our records were obtained directly or indirectly from those in the county clerk's office of each individual county. There are some exceptions to this rule for source information, as when the data is very rare and virtually unfindable otherwise.
Some states did not require the counties to collect and maintain marriage records prior to 1911. South Carolina is one of the states that did not require its counties to maintain marriage records. Its marriage records have therefore been most difficult to obtain. Many records, however, have been gathered in print, and it is from such sources that Hunting For Bears, Inc. has created its computer file. The South Carolina listings have been taken originally from newspapers, church records, pension applications, indeed from any source where information on marriages could be found. These marriage records have been published in books and magazines elsewhere by diligent researchers and are only referenced in our Surname Searches.
