ZOL became a soldier in the military of the alien Almedas when they conquered his homewolrd. He fought CAPTAIN HARLOCK and the DEATHSHADOW in a space battle and lost. He was impressed by the captain's skill and daring and volunteered to help adjust to living conditions when the Almedas conquered Earth.
ZOL tried to figure out why HARLOCK was openly rebelous. He himself never dreamed of fighting his masters. That changed when LA MIME told him that the Almedas were going to destroy TOCARDA. ZOL tried to comendeer the QUEEN EMERALDAS but HARLOCK convinced him to stay behind and try to wage a quiet rebellion while he went to TOCARDA to save ZOL'S sister MERA. ZOL agreed.
When MERGESEN tried execute EMERALDAS and MIA, ZOL lead an effort to save them. The battle was a disaster. Both women lived but EMERALDAS was shot across the face, and MIA was wounded in the back. ZOL went after MERGESEN, but he was shot in the back by PRIME MINISTER TRITOR. He was buried on a hill close to the battlesite.
Upon returning to Earth for the last time, HARLOCK took ZOL'S body with him and had him buried out in space next to his sister, who had died from injuries.
(Note: ZOL does not exisit in the mainstream Leijiverse. All of the events in MY YOUTH IN ARCADIA are considred part of an alternate reality.)
