DEREK WILDSTAR started out his career as a pilot stationed at the Mars Observation Post alongside his friend MARK VENTURE. The two were the ones that found the scout ship from ISCANDAR bearing the sister of Queen Starsha. Later the pair were chosen to be part of the crew of the rebuilt YAMATO, which had been rechristened Argo. At first WILDSTAR hated CAPTAIN AVATAR because he was in command of a disasterous mission where WILDSTAR'S brother Alex, was killed. The two soon put their differences aside and continued on the mission to save Earth. WILDSTAR also met the ship's nurse NOVA. They both loved each other, but neither one could act on their feelings.

WILDSTAR took command of the Argo when CAPTAIN AVATAR died of radiation poisoning. He led ship and crew against the Comet Empire in a heroic attempt to save Earth. During the battle, he was wounded in a gun battle with DESSLOK, but was saved from death by NOVA. Later on, he took charge of the Argo again to battle in what was called the Bolar War.

WILDSTAR led the crew on a time travel mission to stop an alien race from conquering Earth. Later, he teamed with CAPTAIN AVATAR who had actually survived his disease, in stopping the Uruku from invading the planet Denguil. During the mission, the YAMATO was destroyed, but WILDSTAR and NOVA realized their love for one another.

The final fate of DEREK WILDSTAR is unknown.

(Note: In the orginal Japanese cartoon and it's movie sequels, WILDSTAR is called Susumu Kodai. He was killed in the alternate universe story FINAL YAMATO: IN THE NAME OF LOVE.)
