UNICRON was created by PRIMACON to be his ulitmate weapon. Instead, UNICRON rebeled and flew off into the depths of space. For millions of years, he gained the reputation of being a killer planet that would eat anything in its path. No one known of a way to stop him, but UNICRON knew that the Autobot MATRIX was the only thing capable of destroying him.
By 2005, UNICRON neared CYBERTRON, the home of the Transformers. On the way, he devoured LITHONE. Later he found several Decepticons floating in space. He cut a deal with MEGATRON to give him and his associates new bodies in exchange for him destroying the MATRIX. MEGATRON agreed and he was transformed into GALVATRON. His troops were reformed into CYCLONUS, SCROUGE, and the SWEEPS. GALVATRON went to Earth and attacked the Autobots. He was tricked into thinking he'd destroyed the MATRIX. UNICRON gave him a jolt of pain to let him know he failed and then instructed him to go to the planet of JUNK.
On JUNK, GALVATRON defeated ULTRA MAGNUS and stole the MATRIX. He then threatened UNICRON with it. UNICRON responded by transforming to robot mode and attacking CYBERTRON. He then swallowed GALVATRON and demolished the Decepticon fleet. The Autobots and Junkions arrived and started to attack him. Several Autobots rammed their way inside of him, in the process destroying an eye. Outside him, UNICRON fought off an attack by the DINOBOTS and crushed the Junkion ship. Inside him, HOT ROD confronted GALVATRON and managed to recover the MATRIX. He transformed into RODIMUS PRIME and used the MATRIX to destroy UNICRON. The only piece of UNICRON that survived was his head.
UNICRON'S head began to orbit CYBERTRON. In 2006, CYCLONUS went to the head to tap into its memory circuits to find GALVATRON. Him and several other Decepticons noted that the head seemed alive. Later, the Autobots and Decepticons battled on UNICRON'S head. He woke up and began to attack the Transformers. Meanwhile, GRIMLOCK used material he found inside the head to create the TECHNOBOTS.
STARSCREAM'S ghost cut a deal with UNICRON to help him if he'd give the Decepticon a new body. UNICRON had him steal TRYPTICON and steal eyes from METROPLEX. Just as STARSCREAM was about to use TRYPTICON to connect UNICRON to CYBERTRON, he was blasted out by the other Decepticons. UNICRON gave STARSCREAM back his body and ordered him to finish. STARSCREAM refused and flew away. The Autobots then used explosives to propel UNICRON'S head back into space. Since then there have been no other incidents involving UNICRON.
(Note: In the TRANSFORMERS comic, UNICRON is made out to be a dark god. Also, he figures prominently in a stories in the British comic. On a sadder note, Orson Welles died during production of the movie and UNICRON'S last lines were done by Leonard Nimoy. Roger Carmel voiced UNICRON in the season three cartoons.)
