TOCHIRO OYAMA was an engineer in World War 2 who had come to Germany to study. He was involved in an evacuation of German soldiers during the closing days of the war. He ran into and befriended a pilot named PHANTOM F HARLOCK JR. The pilot was the son of the aerial explorer and author of the book My Youth in Arcadia. He gave TOCHIRO the gunsight off his plane as a gift. He then offered to take the little guy to Switzerland so he'll be safe.
TOCHIRO hid in a cargo hold while HARLOCK fought off a squadron of Allied planes. During the fight, a throttle line busted but TOCHIRO held the pieces together almost breaking his hands. This enabled the plane to make a landing in a river near the Swiss border. HARLOCK told TOCHIRO to go for the border while he held off some French Maquis who saw the crash. TOCHIRO escaped to freedom, but before he did he swore to his friend that their families would remain freinds for all time.
The gunsight TOCHIRO OYAMA got from PHANTOM F HARLOCK JR was used several hundreds of years later by another TOCHIRO has an important part of the starship ARCADIA.
