SPIKE is the Autobots must trusted human ally. He first met them when he was working with his father on an offshore oil rig. The Autobots saved them from a Decepticon attack. In gratitude, SPIKE and his father agreed to help them adjust to Earth. Since then they have stayed friends with the Autobots.

SPIKE has made friends with several Autobots. His best friend among them is BUMBLEBEE. In one adventure, SPIKE and BUMBLEBEE were captured to be used as guinea pigs to test the SPACE BRIDGE. After OPTIMUS PRIME was wounded in battle, SPIKE rallied the Autobots to defend themselves. When SPIKE'S father was captured and controled by DR ARCHEVILLE and the Decepticons, SPIKE led a group to CYBERTRON to rescue him.

Almost a year later, SPIKE was wounded in a battle and had to temporaraily inhabit a robot body. A short time later, he met a girl named CARLY. The two fell in love. They even teamed together on a dangerous journey into the heart of CYBERTRON. They later got married and had a son named DANIEL.

By 2005, SPIKE served on MOONBASE 2. When UNICRON attacked, SPIKE and BUMBLEBEE tried to stop him by destroying the moon. The plan didn't work and they were swallowed by UNICRON. They were saved when DANIEL used an EXO-SUIT to blast a cover on top of a vat of acid. A year later, SPIKE was kidnapped by QUINTESONS. He was rescued and ended up saving the day when the QUINTESSONS froze all the Transformers on CYBERTRON.

SPIKE later was part of a group that ended up on the planet NEBULOUS. To help the Autobots and to save his son's life, SPIKE used the HEADMASTER process to link humanoids to Transfromers through their heads. SPIKE used the process on himself to bond with a pacfist named Cerebros. Together they created the giant Fortress Maximus and defeated the Decepticons. In the process, they brought CYBERTRON back to its golden age.

(
Note: SPIKE doesn't become a HEADMASTER in the Japanese cartoon. His history is changed in the comics. He dies in GENERATION 2's second issue.)
